Abstract

This paper describes the trial of a Mobile LearningOrganiser, developed for use by university students.Based on a wirelessly-enabled Pocket PC, theOrganiser makes use of existing mobile applications aswell as tools designed specifically for the context oflearning. The trial set out to identify what are the keytools for such a learning device. The primary uses ofthe Organiser were communication and time-managementas well as access to content. No singleapplication took precedence. The students' feedbackdemonstrated that there is a clear demand forinstitutional support of mobile learning, in particularcourse content and timetabling information. Wirelessconnectivity is crucial to the usefulness of theOrganiser. Usability issues relating to the hardwareand software had considerable impact on the students'usage and satisfaction with the system.
