Abstract

Falls are a major health hazard for the elderly and a major obstacle to independent living. Recent R&D has addressed this problem by developing intelligent monitoring systems that automatically trigger an alarm and appropriate response, even when the person is incapacitated. One such system is Simbad (Smart Inactivity Monitor using Array-Based Detectors), which is based on a low-cost, array-based infrared sensor. An analysis of user needs provided a detailed functional specification for the system. A field trial of a prototype and user research indicate that Simbad could significantly enhance the functionality and effectiveness of existing monitoring systems and community alarm systems.
