Abstract

The Princeton Scalable Display Wall project explores how to build a high-quality, large-format display system with inexpensive commodity components and to effectively utilize it in a collaborative environment. The goal is to develop techniques, software tools and applications to make a large-format display system scalable, easy to use, and useful for collaborative environments. This article provides an overview of our research activities in building and using a second-generation, 24-projector tiled display wall. The research activities include scalable and automatic geometric alignment, color balancing fortiled DLP projectors, tiled display management tools, IMAX-quality parallel MPEG decoder, parallel rendering with k-way replication, distributed sound server, visualizing genomic data sets, scalable isosurface extraction, synchronized programming environment, and multiuser shared display system.
