In this paper, we present the design of bidirectional tangible interfaces in a tabletop computing platform. These interfaces allow users to perform natural gestures and perceive physical feedback. Considering the design issues, we implement two bidirectional tangible interface prototypes that can provide kinetic and shape-shifting feedback to users. Finally, we present a series applications using such interfaces in different application domains. The exploratory work shows possibilities of applying bidirectional tangible interfaces in interactive and ubiquitous computing systems.
