Abstract

This paper presents a multi-user collaborativeinfrastructure, SCAPE (an acronym for StereoscopicCollaboration in Augmented and ProjectiveEnvironments), which is based on recent advancement inhead-mounted projective display (HMPD) technology. The SCAPE mainly consists of a 3'x5' interactiveworkbench and a 12'x12'x9' room-sized walk-throughdisplay environment, multiple head-tracked HMPDs,multi-modality interface devices, and a genericapplication-programming interface (API) designed tocoordinate the components. The infrastructure providesa shared space in which multiple users cansimultaneously interact with a 3D synthetic environmentfrom their individual viewpoints. We detail the SCAPEimplementation and include an application example thatdemonstrates major interface and cooperation features.
