In Japan, 1.82 million citizens use a commercial mobile phone-based navigation service called Navitime, which is influencing how people get around in complex urban environments. This article reports on experiences with this large-scale service and discusses its implications for designing urban-computing services. This article is part of a special issue on Urban Computing.
