Abstract

The Virtual Reality Gorilla Exhibit teaches users about gorilla behaviors and social interactions. Building a virtual environment for educational purposes requires accurate representation, since it is difficult to predict ahead of time what aspects of the environment the student will focus on. While simplifications are needed to maintain an interactive frame rate, hard data must underlie all aspects of the system. We present here some of the techniques we used to build our Virtual Gorilla Exhibit environment and the virtual gorillas that inhabit it, along with the theory behind the project and results from some preliminary user testing.
