Abstract

This paper presents a new algorithm and technique forrendering triangular surfaces in pen-and-ink edge-basedstrokes. Our technique integrates two very important illustrationstrategies for depicting shape features: selectionof drawing direction and the use of light. Drawing directionis given by four stroke directional fields. For lighting,we introduce the idea of "spotlight silhouettes" forfast illumination computation, with target tone matched byadaptive stroke length adjustment. Stroke style is achievedby path perturbation and noise-based weight control. Ourtechnique also allows visual effects of reverse tone valuesand depth cueing. Examples with models from anatomy andarcheology demonstrate the capabilities of our system.
