Disjoint switch boxes have been used in island-style Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) such as Xilinx series FPGAs. However, a disjoint switch box is neither hyper-universal (routable for every set of multi-pin net routing requirements, nor universal (routable for every set of 2-pin net routing requirements). In this paper we present a new type of hyper-universal switch box designs, which is constructed from a disjointed switch box by adding a few switches. This type of switch boxes can be easily fabricated and adopted to the existing FPGA designs, and result in a significant improvement on routability.
