Abstract

In this papel, we propose a new approach to buildingaugmented reality (AR) systems using a component-basedsoftware framework. This has advantages for all parties involved with AR systems.A project manager can reuse existing components innew applications; an end user can reconfigure his system byplugging modules together; an application developer canview the system at a high level of abstraction; and a componentdeveloper canfocus on technical problems. Our proposedframework consists of reusable distributedservices for key subproblems of AR, the middleware to combinethem, and an extensible software architecture. Wehave implemented services for tracking, modeling real andvirtual objects, modeling structured navigation or maintenanceinstructions, and multimodal user interfaces. As a working proof of our concept, we have built an indoorand outdoor campus navigation system using differentmodes of tracking and user interaction.
