Abstract

In this paper we present a technique for themodelling and animation of cartoon hair. In ourapproach the primary shape and motion of the hair isdefined by an animated NURBS volume, along whosesurface are generated clumps of hair geometry. Thebasis of these hair clumps is formed by key hair curvesthat are grown along the isocurves of the originatingsurface and which follow its motion. Particle dynamicsare applied to each key hair and blended with initialanimation using springs. Profile curves are thenextruded along the length of the key hairs to create thegeometry details of the hairdo. The finished animatedhairdo is rendered non-photorealistically in cartoonstyle shading.
