The remarkable recent growth of network technology makes possible the real-time transmission of a lot of data in near real-time. However, to guarantee the real-time transmission of 3D graphic data, further improvements are still required. Highly complex model can provide a convincing level of realism but rather cause problems in realtime applications requiring fast interactivity. Thus, it is useful to have various simplified versions according to the performance of the system. In addition, it is desirable to represent an object using comparatively small amount of data set, if providing the same degree of realism. In this paper, we present a simplification algorithm, which can excellently preserve the characteristic features of the original model after drastic simplification process, even using relatively small datasets. The proposed algorithm is efficient in memory usage and useful in real-time rendering applications. We present experimental results of the proposed algorithm showing high quality approximations with excellent shape preservation.
