Abstract

This paper presents a novel observation system for immersivesoccer match taken by multiple video cameras at areal stadium. The user sees the soccer field model in frontof his/her eyes from the viewpoint through head-mounteddisplay, while the images of players and a soccer ball arealso rendered onto the display. For geometric registrationbetween the soccer field model in the real world and the dynamicsoccer scene in the rendered images, the viewpointposition of the user is computed by using only natural featurelines in the HMD camera image. Since it is difficult tostrongly calibrate the HMD camera and the multiple camerasthat capture the real soccer scene, we employ projectivegeometry for the registration and the rendering. Fordemonstrating the efficacy of the proposed system, video imagesof soccer matches taken at real stadium are renderedonto the HMD camera images of a tabletop stadium model. This is a completely new challenge to apply augmented realityto a dynamic event in a large-space.
