Abstract

Recently there has been a growing interest in the applicationsof sensor networks. Since sensors are generally constrainedin on-board energy supply, efficient management of thenetwork is crucial in extending the life of the sensor. In thispaper, we present a novel approach for energy-aware andcontext-aware routing of sensor data. The approach calls fornetwork clustering and assigns a less-energy-constrainedgateway node that acts as a centralized network manager.Based on energy usage at every sensor node and changes inthe mission and the environment, the gateway sets routes forsensor data, monitors latency throughout the cluster, andarbitrates medium access among sensors. Simulation resultsdemonstrate that our approach can achieve substantial energysaving.
