Abstract

Mapping textures, images or, in general, structures onto surfaces of computer-generated objects is a technique which greatly improves the realism of their appearance. Unfortunately, this poses great computational demands and, even worse, tremendous memory bandwidth requirements on the graphics system. A rapidly emerging technology, which offers the combination of enormous transfer rates and computing power is therefore an ideal candidate to achieve a breakthrough in performance: logic-embedded memories. We describe the features, algorithms, design and performance of a highly-integrated dynamic memory device which incorporates powerful arithmetic units for high-speed 2D texture, reflectance, environment and video mapping. This logic-embedded memory design is the result of a joint research project with the IBM Development Laboratory at Boblingen, Germany.
