Abstract

In this paper, an efficient rendering framework for cloud is proposed. With a simplified lighting model, features such as self-shadowing and light scattering are stored in the Shadow Relation Table (SRT) and Metaball Lighting Texture Database (MLTDB) in the preprocessing. An octree representation of the simulation volume is constructed to facilitate the back-to-front traversal, view frustum culling, and the hierarchical texture selection mechanism. During execution, a hardware acceleartion method using billboard with textures and alpha blending is used for speeding up the rendering. The experiment depicts dynamic clouds rendering with great visual satisfaction and encouraging DPS (current FPS varies from 16 to 30).
