Abstract

Computer animation of cloth made of different materials such as wool, cotton, silk or polyester is a challenging task due to the complex physical behavior of textiles. The correct fall of a towel or a skirt can be calculated in different ways. Here we successfully use particle systems to obtain realistic draping behavior. Although our approach is more general that earlier solutions, we achieve the resulting images much faster than other implementations. This is due to various optimizations, combining techniques of computer algebra, theoretical physics, numerical mathematics, and ray tracing. The approach allows to simulate the dynamic behavior of cloth over time and not just the final drape.
