Abstract

The authors discuss how, to reach Weiser's human-centered vision of ubiquitous computing, we must address several clear goals. First, the everyday practices of people must be understood and supported. Second, the world must be augmented through the provisioning of heterogeneous devices offering different forms of interactive experience. Finally, the networked devices must be orchestrated to provide for a holistic user experience. The authors overview how these goals have affected research in three areas: the definition of the appropriate physical interaction experience; the discovery of general application features; and the evolution of theories for designing and evaluation the human experience in ubicomp.
