Abstract

This article describes our experiences implementing and testing nomadic computing tools at the Exploratorium, an interactive science museum in San Francisco. This is a challenging environment because it is hands-on, boisterous, and makes navigation and visual identification difficult. Our studies suggest that an important design consideration is how users switch between virtual and physical interactions and that a promising area for further investigation is the design of Rememberer-like tools for deliberative capture and later review of the physical world, which postpone much of the users' virtual interaction. Our results illustrate the value of early deployment and user testing: our initial experiments with the guidebook stimulated the design of Rememberer.
