Abstract

The authors describe their prototype of an interactive storytelling system that allows user intervention in a predefined storyline. The system is character-based rather than plot-based, so each character's role is dynamically computed using Hierarchical Task Networks planning. The interaction between characters creates various instantiations of the baseline narrative, and the user can interfere at any time either through physical on-stage intervention or using speech recognition. After introducing the basic AI techniques used in the prototype, the authors discuss the modalities of user intervention and present an example story that the system produced.
